About

It started with a neighbor's question.

In a 2011 First Presidency message, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf told of a member whose neighbor, genuinely curious, asked him: “What did they say in the last general conference?”

The member couldn't recall a single talk. He felt humbled, and he resolved to do better at remembering the words spoken by the Lord's servants. President Uchtdorf then offered counsel for how all of us can better receive, remember, and apply what we hear. Read his message, “General Conference—No Ordinary Blessing.”

This site exists to help answer that neighbor's question, every April and October.

What you'll find

  • What was said. The themes that ran through the conference, each backed by the speakers' own words.
  • Fun with numbers. Word counts, the scriptures quoted, who was cited, and the words that carried the weekend.
  • What we were asked to do. Every invitation, starting with the President of the Church, then grouped by theme, with each speaker who asked named beneath it. Check items off as you go, or print the list.
  • How it was made. The talks are coded passage by passage using methods from academic qualitative research, and every quotation is checked word for word against the official talk texts.

What this site is not

It is not a substitute for the talks. The words belong to the speakers, and the best way to receive them is to read and listen to the talks themselves at churchofjesuschrist.org. This is a study aid to help you remember and act on what you heard.

What Did They Say? is an independent project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
