October 2026 General Conference › Themes › Adversity
Adversity reframed: purposeful, not prevented
Speakers corrected a prosperity reading of obedience: faithfulness does not prevent trial, trial is purposeful, and deliverance comes in God's time and way.
A lens for pondering what was said, found through careful coding. Not an official summary; read the talks themselves for the full message. How it works“The gospel isn’t the umbrella”
What this theme is about
The correction appears even inside a tithing talk: "This does not mean that we will be free from trials or difficulties" (Elder Giuffra). On the same Saturday, two speakers used nearly the same words for the limit of our control: Sister Runia ("something I would not be able to fix") and Elder Matthew J. Eyring's grieving friend ("I can't fix this").
